The thinking behind Didcot Power Station A

Thinking about the closing or ‘decommissioning’ of Didcot power station A is stimulating our interest in the planning and design phase of the station and it’s construction. Tracking down relevant material is a high priority at the moment. We’re interested in finding out about how Gibberd tackled the design issues and the engineering challenges of this project. This might create starting points for our own work… On my first visit, my guide mentioned that a portfolio of Gibberd’s original drawings had been found behind a locker and, she thought, donated to the Vale & Downland Museum. We would love to get our hands on these drawings, but Vale & Downland Museum have no record of this portfolio and so far no one is sure where they are. How beautiful can a power station sound?

During the course of this project we met Martyn Bull, a scientist, writer and film maker who has an interest in Didcot A power station. We were really pleased that Martyn wanted to get involved and undertake his own projects as a spin-off from some of the archive material we shared with him, and you can see some of his images and writing in our book work. We also asked Martyn to make some sound and video recordings of the power station before it was switched off. Didcot A Power Station attracted workers from as far afield as Glasgow, Newcastle and Liverpool, transforming the community of the town as well as transforming the landscape of Oxfordshire. How did I get involved? I’m a writer and I’ve lived 10 miles away in East Oxford for the past 17 years. For much of that time I’ve been travelling through Didcot by train to London to work and I became obsessed with the power station, the way it looked, its impact on the landscape.
